Congratulations to Jennifer Fernandez for completing her thesis defense! She gave an amazing presentation on the "Characterization of Specific Host Factors Promoting Natural Transformation in Acinetobacter baumannii." Thank you labmates who showed up for support! Jennifer is grateful to the following individuals:
- Thesis Defense Committee (Dr. Ramirez, Dr. Nikolaidis, Dr. Brennan) - Dr. Jimenez and Dr. Talmosky - Lab partner (Marlene Hernandez) - Labmates and friends who showed up (Amparo Hoard, Anthony Mendoza, Casin Le, Chelsea Gutierrez, Christine Liu, Emily Dang, Jasmine Martinez, Steve Chang, Wendy Contretas-Aristondo) - Family and fiancé - National Institute of Health (NIH) - Associate Student, Inc. (ASI) - Graduate Equity Scholar Program - ELEVAR Scholar Program The recent graduated students, Anthony Mendoza and Amparo Hoard, are teaching the basic lab techniques and discussing the projects with the new students in laboratory.
Class of 2019 Graduation
Congratulation everyone! Y'all did a great job. We are proud of you. Good luck in your future! Master Graduate: - Jennifer Fernandez Undergraduate Graduate: - Amparo Hoard - Jun Nakanouchi - Anthony Mendoza - Emily Dang - Brianna Stempniak - Jenny Escalante McNair Scholar, Jasmine Martinez, presented her research "Acinetobacter baumannii triggers differential expression of genes to survive and persist to hostile environments." The principal investigator, Dr. Maria Soledad Ramirez, attended the symposium to show support.
Graduate and undergraduate researchers in the lab presented their poster presentation at California State University, Fullerton. The Symposium included a variety of Department such as Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Physics, Geological Sciences, Public Health, Mathematics, and Psychology. The Dean of the college of NSM and the chair of the Biology Department interacted with the presenter and their poster presentations.
Presenters: - Jennifer Fernandez (Graduate Student) - Amparo Hoard - Christine Liu - Alessandro Moriano (Graduate Student) - Jasmine Martinez & Jenny Escalante - Anthony Mendoza Jennifer Fernandez, a graduate student, worked in conjunction with Dr. Ramirez to educate the community on the effects of resistant pathogens. They focused on the importance of washing your hands, completing antibiotic treatments, and dissuading the misuse of antibiotics for viral infections.
Winter Session 2018 Nyah Rodman, a senior biology student, measures the halo of inhibition from tested clinical isolates. The winter session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, provides students the research experience in clinical microbiology. The class taught by Dr. Maria Soledad Ramirez allows student to gain insight on the epidemiology and molecular mechanisms of infectious diseases.
